Contra and English Country Dancing

Contra Dancing

There is a fairly popular kind of dancing that goes on here in town called Contra Dancing. It is practiced at many different venues across town, at various dates both periodic and one time events.

The only one that is known by this writer from personal experience was shown to me by a few other Kindred Spirits participants that apparently go there regularly. It is at the Plaza Arts Center in Carrolton (near Beltline and 35) and is a beautiful facility, well organized, and well attended.

If you decide to go, tell someone else, you might get some interest going.

Contra dancing is different than Ballroom dancing in many ways, even if it shares the same roots. You don't have to know how to Contra dance, it's a "called" dance so they call out the steps and show you how to do it with every dance. You also don't dance with a partner as you do in Ballroom, it changes every dance.

If you've never been to the Plaza Arts Center it's a real treat. Eat some carbs before you go, it will burn them up and wear you out !

English Country Dancing

I have never been to the English Country dances so I can't say, but these comments can be made about the Contra Dancing.
- No experience necessary, it's a called dance.
- They walk you through each dance before it starts.
- It is a very aerobic workout.
- No date needed, you dance with a different partner every time anyway.
- Bring a friend, you'll both leave laughing.
