General Class Information

Times

10 AM every Sunday Morning

Topics

Topics have varied throughout the years according to the current interests of the group, and according to how lucky we get attracting local speakers.

In recent months we have been extremely lucky, attracting such speakers as Pam Boyd, Dr. Don Weaver, and presenters from the Muslim and other communities of faiths.

Sometimes our speakers focus on relationship issues, other times more ethereal or far reaching subjects.

Would it be right for me ?

We would hope so, because we are a fairly social bunch. But if you would wish to commune with bright and smiling individuals, and the topics interest you, take a dip ! The water is fine !

Small Group Discussions

Our speakers are not required to break for small discussions, but it is a tradition that many honor, and one that has worked well for us.

By breaking into groups of 3, 4, or 5 people to discuss elements that the speaker has presented, and then coming back into the big group afterwards, we have gained much. It seems that the adage about "WE are smarter than ME" works for us here.

Who Attends ?

Not just singles ! Yes, we are a singles group. But we often have visitors who are married, including even those who met in our setting.

There is an interesting contrast in our group that merits some mention here. A primary motivator for many who attend is a social experience, so one might assume that means it an emphasis on meeting or even dating. But this is not the case, meeting new people happens all the time, but thankfully it does not devolve into a meat market. Somehow taking care of the spiritual issues seems to come first, and everything else works out...

Social Opportunities

Frequent attendees find the class itself to be a terrific place to see and speak to their friends, both in the small discussions and in the spaces before and after the speaker.

But if you are interested in more, there is always plenty !

Comparing it to other Sunday classes

Is it safe ? (a quote from the movie "Marathon Man")

For the phobic among us, (the author of these notes included) a few words to visitors unfamiliar with Unity traditions:

Many of us have sought out the communion of a spiritual community only to be assaulted by a fundamentalist culture or a place where introverted souls such as ourselves can survive without feeling overwhelmed. Trying to select my words carefully here, but many will understand.

So you may wish to know more about this Unity thing, and more specically, our group, before taking the time to attend one of our classes.

For more info on Unity principles, you'll have to consult more conventional sources, but at least the word "non-threatening" could be added to everything else you might learn.

As to the rest, you will find our group delightfully ( or frustratingly ? ) open and laid back. For whatever reason, we seem to attract very bright, interested, and perhaps just a little bit introverted souls. On the topical side, you will find most of our speakers quite interesting, but if you are looking for Bible thumping hell and damnation threatening dogma, you will be very sadly disappointed. Ours is a spiritual journey, not always as religious one.

So feel free to try us out. We hope to be not so introverted that we at least remember to greet you with a friendly smile on your way in !
